Colombian Talent Shines at Sofitel: Miguel Suárez Wins International Mixology Competition

Young Colombian Miguel Suárez, bartender at the Sofitel Bogota Victoria Regia and its exclusive Bar Basilic, was the overall winner of the recent international competition organized by Sofitel among its 120 hotels worldwide, thanks to his signature cocktail “MI ORIGEN.”

For Miguel, the most important goal was to create a drink that highlighted the very best of Colombia through its ingredients, ensuring that each sip tasted unmistakably Colombian — and he succeeded. His cocktail combines the richness of rum and coffee, balanced with the citrus touch of uchuva juice, a fruit native to Boyacá. A hint of sweetness comes from panela syrup, complemented by the aroma of cardamom, a star anise, and delicate edible flowers that complete the cocktail’s design.

The organizers of the Bar & Mixology competition praised the winner: “We highlight how Miguel Suárez’s creation carries an innovative touch that elevates his craft. Not only does he create experiential cocktails, but he also demonstrates dedication, passion, and excellence in every drink he prepares. His cocktail was more than a beverage; it was a journey.”

One of the most important factors considered by the jury was sustainability. MI ORIGEN is crafted with local Colombian ingredients and its preparation results in almost zero waste.

For his part, Nicolás Heftre, General Manager of the Sofitel Bogota Victoria Regia, stated: “It is a great honor for us as a hotel to be recognized among so many international participants with outstanding mixology proposals. We know that Colombia’s diversity and richness of products make cocktail creations truly unique and limitless. To this, we add Miguel’s remarkable talent, which has been rightfully awarded in this prestigious competition.”
